June 14, 2018 - ATN Seeks Scholars and Mentors for its Diversity Scholars Program

The ATN is searching for scholar applicants and qualified mentors to join its revised and relaunched DiversitClose up photo of two people shaking handsy Scholars program. The program seeks to recruit scholars with a doctoral degree who may not otherwise be able to successfully pursue a career as youth HIV-focused researchers and need mentorship to do so.

“We hope to advance the research careers of the scholars so they can gain research independence by conducting high impact, innovative youth-focused HIV research,” Isa Fernandez, program director and ATN Executive Committee Chair, said.

Scholars accepted into the program will be matched with a mentor whose background and research is compatible with the scholar. The due date for doctoral-level scholars to apply is July 31, 2018. For details about eligibility requirements and how candidates can apply, click here (PDF).

“The ATN is committed to increasing diversity of the scientific workforce and to increase the number of capable scientists representing those communities most heavily impacted by HIV,” Fernandez said. “Through this program we hope to recruit promising doctoral level diversity scholars who are deeply committed to pursuing a youth-focused HIV research career, but have limited access to the quality mentoring needed to achieve this goal.”

Mentors who are interested in taking a hand in shaping the next generation of HIV researchers are needed to join the program. They will help scholars acquire the necessary skills to sustain productive research careers. Mentors are asked to provide at least 8 hours of one-on-one mentoring per month. “In addition to the traditional research skill development, we hope that our mentors will provide scholars real world advice to better navigate the challenges that many diversity scholars uniquely face in their work settings,” Fernandez said. “We hope that they will address work-life balance, learning to say ‘no’ when appropriate, and how to approach issues related to promotion and tenure, to name a few.” The program will last from 24-36 months and will be conducted via teleconferencing along with face-to-face meetings.
